Homecoming

The sun sets by 5:00, but you're not awake to see it go down. Curled up in the front seat under a blanket borrowed from your dorm room bed, you're hard asleep before you even clear the city lines. When you wake up you're westbound, a steady 65 down a pitchblack highway sprinkled with headlights and the motions of people trying to get home. Your brother is driving, dissolving the miles between start and finish with no expectation that you share in the responsibility. The Killers are on the radio, turned down whisper-low to respect your sleep, and for this moment the world is perfectly at peace. Any worries or problems that the past few months may have contained are hours behind you, locked up tight in your deserted dorm room.

It's Christmas Eve and I'm at home. I hope that you can say the same. It's a good feeling, coming home again, so savor the moment-- one day you'll look back on this and wish you could be here again.
